Flatware

Brief

  • This project explores the issues that surround designing for volume production. In this context, planning every detail is crucial in avoiding the trap of 'sculpting' an unreproducible three-dimensional design solution.
  • Flatware is the correct term for what we commonly know as cutlery and is one of the few products we all use on a daily basis.
  • Function and practicality aside, flatware offers the product designer the opportunity to become immersed in subtle form generation and materials manipulation.
  • This assignment is intended to explore and develop an individual approach to form making, surface finish and product semantics in relation to the area of domestic mass manufactured products.
  • The aim of this project is to design a contemporary range of flatware and produce finished prototypes. Historical and contextual issues, ergonomics, hygiene but most importantly function are considered.
  • The flatware is subtle and sophisticated. There has been a strong avoidance of trying to radically reinvent these objects and instead, this idea has been built on the rich history of previously designed products.
