Process

Brief

  • Scandinavian design continues to be appreciated for many reasons. Skilled craftsmanship, inspired by nature, produces aesthetically pleasing products. Natural resources, such as wood, are eco-friendly and sustainable and increasingly locally-sourced materials are utilised. Limited use of materials can provide a minimal and uncluttered aesthetic.

  • All products should be functional and efficient, with longevity or replacement parts. Human-centred design inspired by nature provides a healthy balance by reminding us of our simple, organic roots in an increasingly technological world.

  • This project involves designing and making a lounge chair to exhibition standard, in response to the idea of combining nature, functional and efficient (Scandinavian) design with comfort.

  • These key features of Scandinavian design combined with a focus on comfort is demonstrated through material combinations, fixing details and seating proportions.

  • This project has resulted in a durable, domestic product which has taken inspiration from many designs, such as Jean ProuvĂ©'s CitĂ© Chair, and as it meets the relevant specifications, could be developed for a commercial or public space.

  • The chair is made of two sections; the shell, constructed from ash-veneered moulded plywood with interchangeable upholstered cushions and the frame, constructed from ash cross rail and armrest sections fixed to steel tubing. The ash components are stained light grey and coated with a clear oil. The light grey ash combined with the darker powder coated steel subtly highlights the different features of the chair without overpowering the navy and terracotta upholstery.

  • This process has produced a contemporary, sleek and linear design that enables the user to relax.
