Table Lamp

Brief

  • Table lighting refers to a huge range of design objects that share some common basic attributes - that lead them to be ordinarily situated on a table or similar surface. These include, but are not limited to, scale, proportion and the ability to illuminate a given space.
  • Some Table lights are termed task lights and are designed primarily to increase the luminance of a given space, to aid the completion of specific tasks or activities.
  • Lighting technology now offers a whole host of opportunities to explore how we interact with both the physical object (lamp) and the lighting effect produced. Ideas around interaction in relation to lighting are often focused on how we control the action of on/off, manipulate the lighting effect and change its intensity or direction.
  • This project is to design and make a fully working table lamp prototype. The intention of the task is to explore how careful attention to detail when applied to control the lighting, married with intelligent design and elegantly handled materials, can enhance the quality of physical interaction and the experience of use.
  • This is a task lamp and is designed for the work environment. The inspiration for this product came from dentistry lighting as the dentist can control their light with ease and direct it specifically at the patient's teeth allowing the dentist to clearly examine the area.
  • The lamp is made from brass and beech wood. It is designed to sit in the corner of a desk/ table and has been restricted to rotate to no more than 90 degrees. The lamp shade can move up and down with a rotation of 120 degrees. The switch is placed on the handle. This means when the user interacts with the light there is efficiency in terms of directing the lamp using the handle and turning the light on/off.
